What is DNS (Domain Name System)?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is like the phone book of the Internet. When you type a website address (like google.com) into your browser, DNS translates that name into a numeric IP address (like 142.250.72.14). Computers use these IP addresses to locate and connect to web servers around the world.

Without DNS, you’d have to remember long strings of numbers for every site you visit — DNS makes it easier by using names humans understand.
